Why Your Dishwasher Is Not Cleaning Dishes Properly
A good wash needs four things at once.
A dishwasher cleans with hot water, detergent, spray force, and time. The pump pushes water through the spray arms, the detergent dissolves in hot water, and the filter keeps food from being sprayed back onto your dishes. When any one of those four fails, the results suffer.
That is why the same symptom, dirty dishes, can come from a clogged filter, a spray arm with blocked holes, a water supply that is too cool, hard water that leaves film, or a loading problem. It is also why a part replacement is rarely the first thing to try.
In our experience a filter clean and a look at the spray arms solves a large share of complaints about dishes that do not come out clean.
Common Causes of a Dishwasher That Leaves Dishes Dirty
From the simplest to the ones that need a technician.
Dirty or clogged filter
Food and grease collect in the filter. When it clogs, the water is dirty and spray force drops.
Blocked spray arm holes
Mineral scale and bits of food plug the small holes. Water then sprays weakly or unevenly.
Water not hot enough
Detergent works best in hot water. A water heater turned down, or a long run of pipe, can leave the water too cool.
Hard water scale or film
Minerals leave a cloudy film on glasses and a white crust on the interior. A rinse aid and periodic descaling help.
Wrong loading or too much in the load
Large items can block the spray arms or the detergent door. Crowded racks stop water reaching every dish.
Wrong or old detergent
Old pods, too little detergent, or a product that does not suit your water can leave residue.
Weak wash pump or failed heater
A pump that does not build pressure or a heating element that fails stops the cycle working as designed.
Stuck inlet valve or low fill
If the dishwasher does not take in enough water, it cannot clean. You may hear less water than usual.
How to Fix a Dishwasher That Is Not Cleaning: Six Safe Steps
Take them in order and run a test cycle after the first few.
Clean the filter
Take out the lower rack, twist out the filter, and rinse it under the tap. Scrub gently with a soft brush. Put it back fully seated, or it will not work.
Check and clear the spray arms
Spin each arm by hand and check that it turns freely. Use a toothpick to clear the small holes. Rinse the arm and check that the center shaft is clear.
Test the water temperature
Run the kitchen tap until it is hot, then measure it. If it is well under 120°F, the dishwasher may not be getting hot water to start with.
Check the loading
Put dirty sides toward the spray, keep tall items away from the arm, and do not let bowls and plates nest. Leave the detergent door clear.
Switch detergent and add rinse aid
Use fresh detergent in the right amount. Fill the rinse aid reservoir to help water sheet off and reduce spotting.
Run a cleaning cycle
With the dishwasher empty, run a hot cycle with a dishwasher cleaner or a cup of white vinegar in a bowl on the top rack. Repeat the test load after.
Handy items to have
- A soft brush or old toothbrush
- A toothpick for spray arm holes
- White vinegar or dishwasher cleaner
- A kitchen thermometer
What You See on Your Dishes and What It Usually Means
Use the pattern to narrow down the cause.
| What you see | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Gritty film or food bits | Dirty filter or weak spray | Clean the filter and spray arms |
| Cloudy film on glasses | Hard water | Add rinse aid, run a cleaning cycle |
| Detergent left in the cup | Door blocked or old detergent | Fix loading, use fresh detergent |
| Greasy dishes | Water too cool or low detergent | Check water temperature, use more detergent |
| Dishes wet and not drying | Rinse aid empty or heater fault | Refill rinse aid, then call if it persists |
Dishwasher Not Cleaning: Home Fixes vs Technician Repairs
Safe to try at home
- Cleaning the filter and spray arms
- Checking the water temperature at the tap
- Changing the detergent and adding rinse aid
- Running a cleaning cycle
- Reloading the racks
Leave to a technician
- Testing the wash pump or circulation motor
- Replacing the inlet valve or the heater
- Checking the control board
- Replacing the spray arm bearings or the door latch
- Any repair that needs the unit powered with panels off
What We Find on Repair Calls for a Dishwasher That Does Not Clean
When a dishwasher that does not clean comes in for repair, we check the simple things first, because they are the most likely. We look at the filter, the spray arms, and the water temperature, and we run a test cycle.
If those are fine, we test the circulation pump, the inlet valve, and the heater. A pump that is weak or noisy, a valve that does not open fully, or a heater that does not warm the water are all repairable faults.
We tell you what we find, give you the price, and replace only the part that failed.
How to Keep Your Dishwasher Cleaning Well
Scrape large food off plates but do not rinse them clean, since modern detergents work best with some food to act on. Clean the filter every month or so. Run a cleaning cycle every month or two. Keep a rinse aid in the reservoir.
If your water is hard, consider a water softening step or a detergent made for hard water. Run the hot tap before you start the dishwasher so the first fill is warm.
Dishwasher Still Not Cleaning? Call Now
If the filter, spray arms, and water temperature are all fine, the pump, valve, or heater may be at fault.

Dishwasher Not Cleaning FAQs: Quick Answers Before You Call
Short answers to the questions we hear most. If yours is missing, call and ask.
Why is my dishwasher not cleaning dishes?
A dirty filter, blocked spray arm holes, water that is too cool, hard water, or loading and detergent problems are the usual causes.
Why do my glasses come out cloudy?
Cloudy glasses usually come from hard water. A rinse aid and a periodic cleaning cycle help. Etching can also occur from too much detergent.
How hot should the water be for a dishwasher?
Many makers recommend about 120°F at the tap. Check your manual, since some models heat the water internally.
Should I rinse dishes before loading?
Scrape off large food, but do not rinse completely. Detergent works better with some food soil to act on.
How often should I clean the dishwasher filter?
About once a month for typical use. Clean it more often if you notice odors or gritty dishes.
When should I call for dishwasher repair?
When the filter, spray arms, and water temperature are all fine, or if you hear a weak pump or see the dishwasher not filling. See our dishwasher repair page.
